Digitising our photos (while we can still talk about them) is a project that Casa Cultura aims to deliver in 2019.

Working from neighbourhood houses and community centres, we will run a series pop-up fast digital scanning services to help residents digitise their photographs.

As growth and gentrification advance at an accelerated rate in the inner suburbs, many are choosing to move away from their family homes. The task of digitising photos is extremely time consuming it is often put off until it’s too late. Family photos end up packed in boxes from which they hardly ever emerge.

Transferring family photographs to a non-fading, paperless, shareable format is a crucial step to encouraging people to talk about their past and share their memories with family and friends for generations to come. This gives younger generations a priceless opportunity to explore their family’s journey and better understand their identity.

The project’s scanning sessions will take place in the following geographic clusters. They will be delivered as a community festival with local musicians and food. This will also provide an opportunity to make new connections in the community.

  • Inner North: Brunswick, Coburg, Preston, Thornbury, Northcote, Fitzroy, Parkville, Carlton and surrounds
  • North East: Heidelberg, Eaglemont, Ivanhoe, Rosanna, Alphington, Fairfield, Abbotsford and surrounds
  • West: Footscray, Yarraville, Seddon, Maidstone, Newport, Brooklyn and surrounds

The plan is to give as many people as possible the opportunity to scan photographs in bulk, FREE OF CHARGE. To cover the costs of equipment, staff, venue, USB sticks and transport, we have submitted a funding application for each cluster to Pick My Project.
